Radical Golfby Michael Laughlin The title alone made me want to read this one. I'm sure glad I did! This book is one that any titanium hawk could benefit from. Laughlin's radical golf is really just conservative golf. He really could have just named the book "Practical Golf." However, in this modern era of the marketing crusade for equipment miracles and the spirit of one-upmanship it embodies, his ideas are radical and enlightening. (Having just said such a thing, it appears that a book titled "Practical Golf" just would not sell) ;~} Laughlin encourages the golfer to leave the woods in the garage and tee off with the two or three iron. His whole idea is to get the golfer into a "birdie wedge" position so that the golfer has an easy "free throw" from a safe and manageable position. Here's a guy that loves the wedge so much that I bet he's got a special name for his very own wedge. The only tidbit he recommends that is too radical is his unwavering advice to putt with a three iron, throwing out the putter all together. Yes you can putt with a three iron (all the old-timer's putters had loft). In all good conscience I can't recommend discarding a perfectly good putter. If you sign up for the product test, I'll show you how to turn that putter into a magic wand! This book is a quick read with a good dose of levity. Some of the sections, like the one on how to dress for golf, had me laughing out loud! Laughlin is well read and well traveled. There is a good rhythm between light heartfelt advice, humor, and broader game related recommendations. If you need a good primer in course management this book is for you. Rating: hole in one! |
