Comment on Waiting

by Taylor Spalding

Waiting, though beneficial, must always work in the social context of the pressure to not wait too long. A couple of walks and a couple of waggles should be enough to build the assuredness of the swinger. When waiting becomes a drawn out psychic loop it tends to build up not only physical tension but psychic tension. It usually materializes into an awareness that the others players are secretly saying to themselves, "just swing already." And as some browsers of this site know, we are attempting to dissolve the observer and settle into the pure moment of witnessing. We do not want to stir up conscious activity. If the player builds a long waiting period into his address it is very likey that he will become marked as a slow player. This problem is compounded when the result of the swing doesn't seem to justify having waited so long.

This is why a somewhat formal and consistent routine can be found in better players. They seem to be able to find a comfortable regularity in the way of addressing the ball, not too nonchalant and yet not too pensive. Fostering the idea of going right to the golf ball at address and adjusting everything else to it appears to be the secret of finding the right composture in Waiting. When we walk up to the ball and address it like this we are in a command mode that is responsive and not repressed.
